Gliffy is a free Diagramming Tool, that works entirely in a browser. It has much of the same kind of functionality as Visio, with the advantage that the app works directly in a Web Browser. Here are some features of Gliffy:
- Diagramming in your web browser without downloading additional software
- Desktop application feel in a web-based diagramming solution
- Add collaborators to your work and watch it grow
- Link to published Gliffy drawings from your blog or wiki
- Create many types of diagrams such as Flowcharts, UI wireframes, Floor plans, Network diagrams, UML diagrams, or any other simple drawing or diagram
Gliffy provides collaboration features, which allows multiple users to work in turns on a diagram. I have used the tool to create a Flow Chart, and it worked quite well. It's a good idea to keep on incrementally saving your work in Gliffy, because I ran into a problem when I tried to use the undo command, and it wiped out three quarters of my work which I had not saved. Overall it seemed to work well though, and allowed me to select my shapes, and drag and drop them in my Diagram.
It works pretty much the same way as Visio, and since I was very familiar with Visio that helped a lot. Of course Visio has a lot more templates, than Gliffy, and allows you to do a lot more. Gliffy could turn out to be the next "Visio Killer" !! Microsoft better watch out.
