A Flash Memory breakthrough, has been reported by Samsung. The new 64 GB Nand Memory chips can store the equivalent of 80 DVDs or the equivalent of 18,000 songs.
Samsung is planning on using these chips in creating 64 Gigabyte Solid State Drives, for Laptops, and Gadgets like Camcorders, and MP3 players. Samsung said there was currently an "exploding demand" for flash memory as a storage medium in a range of applications.
Two of these chips can be combined to create a 128 Gigabyte drive for laptops. Since these drives use flash memory, which is semiconductor memory, there are no moving electro-mechanical parts, that are vulnerable to shock and vibration. So these drives in laptops can still work after being dropped, they are lighter in weight, have quicker boot-up and shutdown times, and are faster than regular hard drives.
